As an attorney working with international clients and traveling internationally myself, the relatively new federal policy permitting virtually unlimited searches of laptops and cell phones has been quite disconcerting. According to the soon-defunct New York Sun, Senator Russ Feingold of Wisconsin apparently did as well. He has introduced a bill raising the standards for confiscation and search of laptops carried by US citizens entering the US. The rights (or lack thereof) of foreign nationals would remain largely unchanged under the bill.
